Every March, Carroll County residents look forward to the return of the official county bird, the Eastern Bluebird. The excitement surrounding this annual event is due to the fact this very special bird brings such joy to the observer. Sporting a sky blue back and a reddish earth tone breast, the bluebird has become a well known symbol of happiness as well as the subject of countless songs and poems.
The precious birds are so loved that the North American Bluebird Society (NABS) was formed to support and protect the bluebird as it may delight future generations. One of the most important jobs of this non-profit group is to monitor and maintain more than 15,000 nest boxes in the United States and Canada as well as to educate and train bluebird volunteers.
Through the continuing efforts of all of us, Carroll County can continue to welcome home this special bird each spring.
